Lie to Me

Comes on tonight!  I just love that show!  It is so fascinating!  I would love to have a job where I knew how to tell if a person was lying just by reading their facilial expressions and body movements.  It is very informative.  My daughter loves it too.  My son, not so much.  Well, he hasn't been watching it with us, but we learned some things about body language, so the other day he was answering some question I asked him and my daughter says "Oh, he's not being truthful, his eyebrow went up" and I said "Yes, and his chin is thrust forward, another indicator that he is fabricating a story." and my son says "WHERE DO YOU GUYS COME UP WITH THIS STUFF?"  It was pretty funny, actually.  Me and my daughter, working on becoming lie detectors!!!!  (well, I have to start somewhere!!)

Well, another great show!  Love it, love it, love it.  Maybe I'll get better at reading facial expressions/body language!!

The show comes on Wednesdays.  I really really like that show.  My daughter and I have been learning quite a bit about reading body language.  Sometimes we watch the news, you know where they show clips of people responding to media, etc., just so we can pick out their expressions and body language to figure out if they are lying, upset, angry, etc.  It really is pretty interesting.  I would really like to study that someplace, but I have no idea where.  Maybe they have some books on it.  I may have to look into that.

Wow!  That is a fascinating site!  Thanks Heart!  I am going to look at that more this weekend.

Just don't get to caught up in the 'science' of their lie detecting.  It's more reading an individual than anything.  Some people are great people readers some are not and no training will make someone become one.  Raised eyebrow could also be a true surprise that you asked such a question and a thrust chin could also be the same thing and neither would have anythng to do with a lie.  There are so many nuances to reading facial expressions that it is impossible to relate one to another.

But I do like the show.  I like how they show what they are talking about using commonly know speeches, people, and events.  But given enough time I could put together a tape that shows someone lie and the proof was he was scratching his butt.

Its kind of like statistics, its only as valid as long as the numbers arn't being manipulated.

It also relies heavily on logic principles which are hugely flawed even on the most basic level.

ie: A dog is a mammal, a cat is a mammal, therefore a dog is a cat.  That is a logically sound proof even though we know it is false.  In college I took a logic course, at the end I logically proved that an F was an A and the teacher raised my C to a B  Wink ( of course if I spent as much time studying the material as I did trying to prove an F was an A I would have made at least a B and probably made an A)

Well actually, I'm pretty good at reading people.  UNLESS I am emotionally involved (so, with potential mates it does not work nearly as well...well, I guess that is not technically true, I make excuses to myself for potential mates whereas others I do not.  Have to work on that).  I think I probably learned how to read body language as a child, having a mother who said one thing but meant another.  Pretty quickly I learned how to read her body language because I didn't like getting spankings with the leather belt on my bare butt all the time....it didn't take me long to learn how to read her.  Actually, I read her really well.  Even when she is denying she is acting a certain way, her body language clearly shows me the truth.  And although everyone in the town she lives in thinks she is really an awesome, wonderful Christian woman, she often does things she shouldn't, only they just don't realize or know it.  She makes up stories quite often too.  In fact, I can tell her a story about something that happened to me, and the next time I go visit her, she will tell me the story as if it happened to her.  If I point out that I am the one who told her the story, that it happened to me not her, etc., she gets really angry and upset.  I now pretty much just let it go if I ever do talk to her (which is rarely any more) because I know she'll lie about it anyway, so what is the point.

Did I get sidetracked???

My reading body language is also why my kids both had a hard time trying to sneak things by me.  Although my daughter did some things she shouldn't have, and so did my son, those things always happened when spending the night at someone else's house.  My daughter will be the first to tell you that you can't get anything by me.  I can smell a lie from her a mile away!!  She says she can't get away with anything!! (Which I'm sure is not true, I'm sure I missed some things....but I know when something is amiss and not quite right).

Giving people the benefit of the doubt is not necessarily a bad thing Heart.  But you and I both have to remember that if we are constantly having to give someone the benefit of the doubt, or they cause us to question ourselves, we're better off just cutting em loose and going on down the road.  I sure haven't done that for a lot of my life.  But, I'm learning!!!!!!
